I've got roosters on the brain.
We went to the big plant sale at the community college yesterday, and for the second year in a row I got there minutes after The Tomato Lady sold out of all her tomato starts. I bought some tomato plants (along with cantaloupe, watermelon, eggplant and peppers) from another gal a few booths down. I'm sure her starts are just as good, but my tomatoes from The Tomato Lady went gangbusters two years ago, so I'm bummed.
Anyhow, roosters. The sale offers a mix of plants, planters, yard art, etc. The work of one artist, Cheryl D. Halverson, caught my eye. She paints colorful roosters and chickens (see first photo below). For some reason, I'm way into farm animals right now. J bought a painting from one of his students recently that's sort of an abstract chicken face. I love it and can't wait to frame it and hang it up.
The look we're trying to go for in the house is what I call "folk modern." Think 100-year-old quilt draped on a clean-lined mid-century inspired sofa. Halverson's paintings would be perfect in our house and her prices are extremely reasonable, but my cash went to crops yesterday so I didn't bring one home.
So you can imagine how my heart went pitter patter this afternoon when my Mother's Day gift--"Alabama Stitch Book," by Natalie Chanin--had directions for making a rooster tablecloth (see second photo below). I think I'll follow the pattern, but stretch the fabric on an art canvas instead of putting it on a table.
Hope everyone's having a good Mother's Day. We're having a lovely one here. Yummy breakfast at my favorite neighborhood spot. Some nice gifts. And a "Happy Mother's Day" with a big wet kiss on the lips from Bo. Does it get much better?
